National Coffee Day Is Coming: What Your Brew Says About You
Jessica Haggard READ TIME: 5 MIN.
With National Coffee Day around the corner, have you ever wondered what your go-to coffee says about you? Recent research suggests that your favorite brew could reflect aspects of your lifestyle, values and even your social habits. The debate is hotter than ever: Is your cup of joe just a habit or a window into who you really are? .
A survey by coffee experts De'Longhi revealed fascinating results. Latte drinkers tend to be bookworms, flat white fans are most likely to be culture vultures and those who prefer a cold brew are said to be the life of the party. It might sound lighthearted, but coffee choices have become a cultural shorthand. Curious where your brew puts you? Let's dig in.
It may not be one of those coffee facts etched in stone, but some experts believe our connection with coffee goes beyond psychology. Coffee habits even shape how we shop. "Your coffee order reveals more about your shopping DNA than any personality test," says Chris Badja, managing partner at Groomsday.
After analyzing 47,000 wedding gift transactions, he found that black coffee drinkers make decisions faster, purchasing 73% quicker than others. Latte drinkers often browse in the afternoons and lean toward experiential gifts, while instant coffee fans gravitate to practical items under $50.
"Your morning ritual is not about caffeine only," Badja explains. "It is your blueprint for decision-making."
It's not just how our coffee preferences shape the way we shop or make decisions. Data suggests those same patterns spill over into our emotional lives and how we handle stress, routine and change in daily life. "Individuals who remain loyal to the same coffee on a daily basis tend to use that very ritual as an anchor in order to maintain anxiety levels, much like a daily reminder of predictability prior to going into stressful situations," explains Kaila Hattis, founder and licensed marriage and family therapist at Pacific Coast Therapy.
On the flip side, clients who experiment with flavors, sizes or even switching between hot and iced drinks tend to show "more elastic emotional responses and feel more comfortable with change," Hattis adds. These seemingly small choices reflect bigger patterns in how people cope with transitions, avoid discomfort or seek stability.
In addition, clinical psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula surveyed a thousand people to see if their daily coffee order could reveal something deeper about their personality. Participants were tested on traits like extroversion, perfectionism and warmth, then asked to share their go-to drink.
The results, which she published in her book " You Are WHY You Eat," showed some curious overlaps between coffee habits and personality types. But before you start psychoanalyzing your cup of joe, Durvasula reminds us: "We are no more defined by our coffee orders than we are by our astrological signs." The fun lies in seeing just how much those little rituals might reflect bigger parts of who we are.
So what does it all look like in action? Let's break down some of the most popular coffee orders and what they might reveal about the people sipping them.
Black coffee
Straightforward and strong, black coffee is the no-frills classic. Its drinkers value clarity and routine, often preferring simplicity over complication. However, that loyalty can signal stubbornness, with little interest in experimenting.
Latte
A latte blends rich espresso with creamy milk, making it one of the most approachable coffee drinks. Fans are often warm, creative and social, enjoying connection as much as caffeine. Still, the endless ways to customize can give them a reputation for indecision.
Oat milk latte
A modern twist on the classic, the oat milk latte is smooth, slightly sweet and eco-conscious. Its drinkers tend to be wellness-minded and conscious of trends, often blending flexibility with purpose. The downside? They can sometimes come off as a little self-righteous about their choices.
Cappuccino
Equal parts espresso, steamed milk and frothy foam, cappuccinos are all about balance. Drinkers often skew stylish and detail oriented, caring as much about presentation as flavor. Yet they may be cautious, sticking to what's familiar instead of pushing boundaries.
Cold brew
Bold, smooth and served chilled, fans of cold brew are often adventurous, outgoing and trend-savvy, the kind of people who like being in the know about what's new. They thrive on novelty and intensity, often bringing that same energy to their lives. But their appetite for newness can veer into impulsiveness.
Iced coffee
A classic brewed coffee served cold, iced coffee is comfort in a cup. Fans are adaptable and loyal, ordering it year-round regardless of the season. That devotion can signal stability, or an unwillingness to change.
Espresso shot
Quick, concentrated and powerful, espresso shots pack a punch. Drinkers are often ambitious, efficient and eager to get results fast. This order can reflect a high-energy personality, someone who thrives under pressure and enjoys tackling challenges head-on. The tradeoff? A restless streak that resists slowing down.
Black Americano
Made with espresso and hot water, the Americano is sharp yet straightforward. Its fans are decisive and efficient, valuing clarity in both thought and action. However, their practicality can also border on rigidity, making them resistant to detours or indulgences others see as harmless fun.
Macchiato
Just a dollop of milk on bold espresso, the macchiato is a strong statement. Drinkers tend to be risk-takers who are confident, decisive and unafraid to stand out. Still, their all-or-nothing energy can sometimes come off as intimidating, with little patience for anything watered down.
Flat white
Smooth and velvety, the flat white signals quiet sophistication. Fans often value culture, quality and subtle sophistication. They're less interested in flashy trends and more about depth, whether in conversation, art or their careers. These drinkers are thoughtful observers who enjoy control, but sometimes their perfectionist streak can make them overly critical of themselves and others.
Cortado
Equal parts espresso and milk, the cortado is balanced yet bold. Its drinkers love balance and are analytical thinkers who can keep their emotions in check while still appreciating life's small luxuries. On the flip side, their measured approach can sometimes come across as overly controlled or reserved.
Seasonal flavored latte
Sweet and spiced, seasonal lattes like pumpkin spice latte are instant mood boosters. Fans of festive drinks are enthusiastic, sentimental and eager to embrace tradition. This is a reflection of a deep connection to nostalgia and a willingness to embrace joy, though skeptics sometimes tease them for being basic.
At the end of the day, coffee may not be a crystal ball into your psyche, but the rituals, preferences and little choices we make around our cup do reveal patterns about how we handle stress, change and decision-making.
The link isn't definitive, yet it's hard to ignore how closely our caffeine habits mirror the way we navigate life itself. So the next time you order your go-to brew, ask yourself: Is it just coffee, or is it your personality in a cup?
