Watch: Gay Michigan Man Hospitalized After Brutal Hate Crime Assault

A gay man in Michigan remains hospitalized as his traumatized partner speaks out after they were attacked by an epithet-hurling assailant.

Local news outlet ClickOnDetroit reports that Michael Hall was hospitalized in critical condition after being assaulted by the driver of a white sedan as he and his partner were riding home on their scooters.

Hall's partner, Anthony Hamilton, described the June 15 attack to the news station, recounted that, after knocking Hall down with a punch, the attacker stood "over Mike, he's on him, like 'I'll kill you,' and I'm pushing him back." Meanwhile, a passenger in the attacker's car was "yelling for the driver to stop," according to the report, but to no avail. Hamilton said he shouted for the passenger to "dial 911."

Among Hall's injuries included a "brain bleed, skull fracture, broken nose, fractured eye socket, and memory loss," per the report. At this time, Hall remains hospitalized, though his condition is improving. However, due to mounting medical costs, a GoFundMe has been established to help cover Hall's care.

Per the GoFundMe page, the sedan apparently stopped to allow the two men to cross. It was at that point that the driver began his verbal attack, "shouting anti-LGTBQ+ slurs." The driver then began following the men "until Michael stopped and shouted to the driver to leave them alone.

"It was at this point the driver got out of the vehicle and ran towards both Michael and Anthony" – that's when the physical assault took place. The account goes on to describe that, as Hall lay on the ground, Hamilton tried to get a look at the car's license plate, but "the driver fought with Anthony to keep him away from the vehicle." A bystander called 911 and the driver and his passenger left the area.

The news outlet indicates no security cameras were nearby to record the attack and the descriptions of the vehicle and the attacker are "vague": A white sedan and a white male standing about 5'11. Local authorities encouraged anyone with knowledge of the assault to come forward with information.

"The Macomb County Sheriff's Department is investigating if it is a hate crime," the report added.

"Hate crimes are on the rise all over the country, and the FBI reports that attacks on LGBTQ persons make up 17 percent of all reports nationally," according to Raw Story's report on the attack.

"This comes as some Republicans continue to attack gay rights, with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) even calling the rainbow pride flag a 'hate symbol.'"
